National and International Transportation Connections

Turkey’s only province which has boundaries with 3 countries, Iğdır is located on an important transportation corridor thanks to this advantage. The routes of Iğdır-Nakchevan and Iğdır-Doğubeyazıt which are in the nature of International Route are the densest routes in terms of vehicle traffic in Iğdır. Vehicle traffic in these routes consists of heavy vehicles generally and apart from this, it consists of the vehicles of Iranian and Nakhcevan tourists visiting Iğdır during public holidays especially.

Highways of Iğdır is in highly good condition and it was constructed as dividend road with the effect of having a plain land. Therefore, its road quality is enabled to be increased and make suitable for the heavy vehicle traffic. Thanks to moderate climate, its roads are open for transportation for 4 seasons.

The most significant development in Iğdır apart from the highways are the operational launch of the airport. Airport constructed on Kars road which is 15 km away from City center will provide service not only for Iğdır but also for Doğubeyazıt which is 50 km away from Iğdır, for Nakchevan which is at the distance of 85 km, and for Kağızman which is at the distance of 80 km, and for Kars (140 km) and Ağrı (143 km.) when it is not possible to land on Iğdır because of the severe weather conditions during winter.

Another development experienced in Iğdır is the project of Kars-Iğdır-Nakchevan railway. The railway line which will connect Tureky to Itan, Turkmenistan and Pakistan over Nakchevan is planned to be installed. With Kars-Tbilisi-Baku railway, a railway connection between Azerbaijan and Nackhevan is aimed to be installed. Therefore, this project is international-scaled project.
