Iğdır has four districts one of which is the center.
It is located on the Erzurum-Kars part of the Eastern Anatolia of Turkey. The city center consists of 3 towns and 49 villages. Its economy depends on agriculture. Great variety of product is cultivated in Iğdır Lowland. The Lowland is considered as another Çukurova in North Anatolia. Vegetable gardening has been improved. Primary agricultural products are wheat, barley, sugar beet, apple, melon, watermelon, corn, apricot and pear. Production rate has been decreased recently because of some restrictions such as quota although once cotton and sugar beet were the primary products. Husbandry is an important income resource. Mostly sheep and cattle are grown. Husbandry is mostly oriented to alive animal trade.
The center was established on the middle side of Iğdır Ovası in the joint section which connecting Kars to Dilucu boundary door on Aralık and to Gurbulak boundary door on Doğubayazıt. The city which is on an important culture joint is the sole city of Turkey which is neighbor with three countries because it has boundaries with Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran. Center of Iğdır is neighbour only with Armenia among those countries.
One third of the survey of Ağrı Mountain which it the highest mountain of Turkey is within the boundaries of Suveren Village connected to the center of the province. Also Ağrı Mountain can be seen from each corner of the city easily.
Aras River determining the boundary with Armenia on the east of Turkey flows though Iğdır boundaries after connecting with Arpaçay.
Aralık: Its distance to the center is 45 km. It was saved from Russian occupation on 14 November 1920 and became town center with “Başköy” name for Iğdır until 1 April 1960, then it was connected to Kars by becoming a “district” governorship status. It has 22 villages. Aralık district is the most eastern spot of Iğdır and our country. It is the sole joint point of our country which has neighbourship and boundaries with three countries.
Karakoyunlu: It hosts for numerous works left from Turkish state ruled under the name of Karakoyunlular. Being a district on Eastern Anotlia connecting to Iğdır, Karakoyunlu is surrounded by Aralık on its east, Armenia on its north, center on its west and the slopes of Ağrı Mountain looking to the Iğdır. Karakoyunlu is 15 km away from Iğdır’s center.
Tuzluca: Tuzluca is located on the west side of Iğdır. The moutains are of great majority in terms of landforms. Since there are abundant of water and opportunity for cultivation of various kind of vegetable and fruit, the region is highly important. The district which has approximately 1,254 km2 area consists of approximately 35,4% of the lands of Iğdır (3,539 km2) The province of which firstly-known name is Kulp was named after the rock salt mines named Tuzluca. It has been observed that asthma and bronchitis patients can breath easily in these salt caves. There are 81 villages in the district. The area where Tuzluca is located on has an important location in terms of transportation. Highway connection of Iğdır which has boundary with three countries pass through Tuzluca. Also, the shortest highway connecting Kars to Ağrı and the highway connection over Kars to Black Sea ports (Hopa and Trabzon) and Iran, Azerbaijan pass through this district.
